Case Studies - Introduction


Tom in the field ground truthing pathways This case study follows a group of university archaeologists led by a young faculty member, Tom, known for his bleeding edge and innovative uses of technology out in the field and back home in the lab. Tom’s group includes students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and other professionals and students at other universities. Their research investigates the lived experience of the inhabitants of their South American excavation site under colonial rule. Their conjectures and inference are based on the spatial relationships between structures in the settlement as well as artifact and administrative document analysis.

Urban Planners
Affectionately called “Gotham,” this case study examines the professional practices of several urban planners who frequently conduct participatory planning sessions with community residents and business owners.  Interested in how neighborhood stakeholders’ voices make it “into the map,” we observe the translation of residents’ narratives about place and daily life into a spatial representation of a “community” by the planners.  This group of planners borrows concepts from other planning departments around the country to modify their own professional practices and interactions with the public.  These circulating concepts very often make their way to the participatory planning sessions whereupon they are taken-up, or not, by community members in various ways.  Currently, the bulk of our video data documents planners and residents discussing a particular neighborhood over a table-sized map.
