Adrian Contreras Selected as 2007 - 2008
California Pre-Doctoral Fellow

Congratulations to Adrian who has been selected as a 2007-2008 CA
Predoc Scholar. Adrian will continue working one-on-one with his faculty
mentor, Dr. Anca Segall in the Dept. of Biology. Additionally, he
will receive support to fund other activities such as:
* visits to doctoral-granting institutions to explore opportunities
for doctoral study
* travel to a national symposium or professional meeting in his chosen
field;
* other related activities such as membership in professional organizations
and journal subscriptions
* graduate school application and test fees.
Adrian joins other MBRS scholars who were recipients of this outstanding
award including: Brenda Salumbides (Johns Hopkins U Masters student,
biology), Felizza Quinones (3rd year Ph.D. student, UCSD, biology),
Adriana Villasenor, MPH (1st year student, Epidemiology, University
of WA), Manuel Angeles, M.A. (Graduate student, SDSU GSPH), Iva Macaspac
(current undergraduate), and Feion Gillis, M.A.(1st year Ph.D. student,
SDSU/UCSD Clinical Psychology program).
We congratulate Adrian on this achievement and look forward to his

2007 MBRS/IMSD SCHOLARS
SUMMER FELLOWS:
Gloria Zarate is
currently conducting research at the University of Connecticut. She
is currently investigating, "Phorphyrin Library for
TNT Sensing", under the direction of Dr. Christian Bruckner.
Gloria is conducting a series of titrations with Porphyrins solutions
and Nitro-Aromatic compounds in order to determine which Porphyrins
are the most efficient detecting TNT, a main component of explosives.
Gloria's work will result in a poster presentation by the end of the
summer, and she hopes to present her data at the 2007 SACNAS conference
in Kansas City, Missouri.
Edgard Vargas,
MBRS Psychology Undergraduate Selected for Advanced Statistical Training
in Psychology!
Edgar Vargas, MBRS Psychology undergraduate has been selected to attend
the American Psychological Association's Advanced Statistical
Training in Psychology. The course itself will be held at the APA
Headquarters building in Washington, DC, with housing provided for
Edgar at Catholic University.
The program will take place from Saturday, July 14 to Sunday, July
22.
Only 18 students were chosen for this honor! Edgar will be able to
strengthen his statistical skills and apply them during his new research
placment with Dr. Victoria Ojeda at UCSD.
Adrian Contreras
awarded the Microbiology Undergraduate Research Fellowship (MURF)
Summer Fellowship
Senior Microbiology major, Adrian Contreras, was awarded the The
MURF fellowship provided by the American Society for Microbiology
(ASM).
Adrian has chosen to stay at SDSU to advance his project under Dr.
Anca Segall, his MBRS and ASM Mentor.
The program provides a total funding of up to $5,850.
* Up to $3,500 for student stipend
* Up to $850 for student lodging
* Up to $500 for roundtrip travel to the host institution (if applicable)
* One year ASM student membership
* Up to $1,000 in travel support to attend 2007 ASM General Meeting.
* Funding to present at the next ABRCMS conference
* Funding to present at the next ASM conference
Adrian was selected based on the following criteria:
* Academic achievement
* Achievement with previous research experiences or independent projects
* Commitment to research
* Career goals as a research scientist
* Personal motivation to participate in the program
* Willingness to conduct summer research with an ASM member at their
home institution or at a sponsoring U.S institution
* Leadership skills
* Involvement in activities that serve the needs of underrepresented
groups.

MANA
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED TO FOUR MBRS/IMSD STUDENTS

The MANA de San Diego Scholarship Program was established in 1991,
in memory of Sylvia Chavez, a talented and tireless volunteer of MANA
de San Diego. Scholarship Program is designed to provide some financial
assistance to Latinas already enrolled in higher education. All MANA
recipients and their families will be recognized at the special Scholarship
Reception, to be held at the University of San Diego (USD) on Sunday,
July 22nd. Since its inception, MANA has awarded over $140,000 in
scholarships to deserving Latinas.

Karla
Blanco Selected for 2007 Vice-Presidential Student Service Award -
QUEST FOR THE BEST
Congratulations go out to Karla Blanco, MBRS Psychology senior!
Karla has been selected for the 2007 SDSU Vice-Presidential Student
Service Award - "QUEST FOR THE BEST” award. This is a prestigious
award in which students are selected based on academic excellence,
student involvement and commitment, community service outside the
SDSU campus, and leadership qualities and development.
Karla is a research scholar in the Ronald E. McNair program and the
NIH/NIGMS MBRS program. She is also the President of the Society for
the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS)
SDSU Chapter. Karla has presented numerous scientific presentations
at national conferences including the Western Psychological Association
(WPA), and the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native
Americans in Science (SACNAS). At the 2006 SACNAS conference in Tampa
, FL , she was recognized for "Outstanding Psychology Poster"
in her session. Karla has also been a recipient of the MANA scholarship,
a national Latina organization, which empowers Latinas through leadership
development and community action.
Karla and her faculty mentor, Dr. Thierry Devos, will
be honored at the gala banquet on April 20th. Karla, her husband,
and her three children will be moving to Washington State this summer
where she will begin the Ph.D. Program at Washington State University
specializing in Counseling Psychology.

2006 UNDERGRADUATE
AWARDS
Congratulations go out
to MBRS undergraduate scholars Veleka Boyd and Aurora Ramos. Veleka
Boyd was awarded the Glen Nagel CSU undergraduate research award,
which provides Veleka with $1,500 for travel to a scientific meeting.
Veleka has chosen to go to the Cold Spring Harbor meeting on Germ
Cells this October in Long Island, New York.

Aurora has been awarded a 2006 Diversity Travel Award to attend the
5th Annual IMFAR (International Meeting for Autism Research) Conference
in Montreal, Canada.

This award will cover up to $1,000 for her attendance at IMFAR. This

All MBRS undergraduate scholars are required to present a oral OR
a poster at this event.
The URS is open to ALL undergraduate majors in the Colleges of Engineering
or Sciences who conduct research.
