How can you benefit from particpating in the SDSU MBRS IMSD program?

The MBRS Program is a structured research training program that provides year-round academic and professional development activities. MBRS scholars increase their competitiveness for entering directly into Ph.D. programs. As of today, seven of the eleven May 2011 graduates are interviewing for Ph.D. programs and four students have been accepted.

Students benefit from (but not limited to) the following:

  • Assistance on research laboratory placements

  • Year-round financial assistance for your research development. Undergraduates are paid 15 hours/week during the academic semesters, and up to 30-40 hours/week over the summer (depending on the budget)

  • Year round research and academic mentoring

  • Connection to graduate program and other research opportunities

  • Travel funds to present at local, and national conferences in your field

  • Laboratory training supplies

  • Networking with faculty, staff and other science students

  • Link to other honors or award opportunities

  • Graduate program application development: personal statement workshops; feedback on personal statement drafts

  • Resume/curriculum development feedback by faculty and peers

  • Technical and scientific writing skills development

  • Participation in scientific seminars

  • Ph.D. panels to network with current graduate students

  • Pre-doctoral fellowship writing workshops

  • Ethics in biomedical research training

  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Review Course and GRE practice books and preparation

  • Academic enrichment/tutoring

  • Professional public speaking workshops and coaching

  • Exposure to scientists in your field of interest

  • Connection to other predoctoral funding mechanisms (how to be funded as a Ph.D. student)
