Program | Coursework

Required content courses (see the complete list [PDF]) are designed to enable students to

  • acquire research design and research methodology skills that are necessary to the study of the learning process;

  • acquire understandings of how people learn mathematical or scientific concepts;

  • develop broad perspectives of their educational field, including major theoretical and philosophical issues; and

  • become familiar with existing research on learning in mathematics and science.

In addition to the core courses, students, in consultation with a Faculty Advisor, develop a program of coursework consistent with their career goals, special interests, and qualifications. Students complete their coursework in the first two years of the program, during which they also fulfill the two-year residency requirement—one year on each campus. The residency requirement cannot be replaced by coursework taken elsewhere—rather, the program is designed around a person's background, including coursework taken prior to entering the program.
