 The fitting of a mathematical model to a, possible large, set of measured data, to obtain a compact or analytical representation by estimating the parameters of the model, is a frequent problem in science and engineering. In this course we will review the numerical and algorithmic tools available for the solution of associated linear and nonlinear least squares problems, including special techniques for the ill-conditioned, the large scale, and the separable nonlinear cases. We will discuss some of the existing software and illustrate its use in laboratory sessions.
