“Breeding, singular vectors, Lyapunov vectors and data assimilation”

Abstract

We will discuss the relationship between bred vectors, singular vectors and Lyapunov vectors, their relationship to errors in data assimilation systems, and the implications of the low-dimensionality of the atmospheric attractor recently discovered. The potential for the use of breeding in an almost cost-free approach to the correction of the "errors of the day" will be also presented. If time permits, we will discuss the application of breeding for ocean data assimilation.
