Lecture Exams. There will be two written exams and one written final. The first exam will cover lectures 1-7, the second: lectures 8-15 and the final will be based on the entire course; 25% lectures 1-7, 25% lectures 8-15 and 50% lectures 16-25. The questions will be a variety, including but not limited to: matching, short-answer, definitions, drawings, and multiple choice.
Lab Exams. There will be one lab practical covering labs 1-7 and a comprehensive lab final (40% labs 1-7, 60% labs 8-13). These will consist of identifying structures from slides and/or fresh material, either at microscope stations or a PowerPoint presentation.
Lab note book. The lab notebook will be collected at the time of the lab practical and the lab final. It will be graded for completeness of drawings and labeling, table of contents, and question answers. Each lab is worth 4 points. These points are awarded as follows: 4 points: lab exercise titled, entered into table of contents, drawings neat, legible and accurately labeled, all questions answered; 3 points: missing a few labels, missing answers to one or two questions; 2 points: many labels missing, missing answers to several questions, missing one or two drawings; 1 point: few labels, drawings or answers to questions; 0 points: nothing.
Quizzes. There will be one quiz a week on Monday mornings, before lecture, based on the previous weeks material and the current days reading. These will be short (2-3 questions) worth 9 points each for a total of 98 points. The questions will be graded as follows: 3 points: answer correct and well written; 2 points: answer mostly correct and semi-well written; 1 point: answer more wrong than right; 0 points: no answer.
Project: Annotated Bibliography. The goals of this project are to learn how to do scientific library research using the internet and to write concise summaries of the information presented in journal articles. The project is worth 25 points. For more information, citation examples and useful websites, click here.
Attendance. Attendance to lecture and labs is required and punctuality is expected. Unexcused absences from either will not be tolerated. Two unexcused absences from lab will result in course grade lowered by one letter grade. To excuse an absence, you must notify me by email or phone beforehand or with 24 hours if lab will be missed with a valid excuse (severe illness, death in family, car accident, locust swarm, etc). Labs can be made up, but only for excused absences.
Cheating/Plagiarism. Cheating (eyes not on own exam, exam answers the same as neighbors: especially evident when the same wildly incorrect answer is given) and plagiarism (cut and pasting directly from websites, journal articles, etc) will not be tolerated. Suspected cases will result in a zero for the assignment and will be reported to the judiciary committee. This is a rigorous course, if you are having trouble keeping up or need help, please see me.
