Responsibilities of Students and Professor

Responsibilities of Students
Students are responsible for their own learning and achievement. They are expected to arrive on time and be attentive during lectures, labs, discussions, and field trips. Students must be prepared for activities by completing assigned readings beforehand and asking questions when material is unclear. Students are expected to cooperate with and assist their peers during group activities. Rather than relying on the instructor as the primary source of knowledge, students are expected to use a variety of resources — chiefly their own curiosity and drive to learn. Students will behave professionally, taking care to not abuse live animals. Most students will need to spend, on average, 6-8 hours each week studying outside of the class (i.e., equal time in and out of class).

Responsibilities of the Professor
Dr. Hentschel will provide a variety of educational activities and assessments that are designed to facilitate several different learning styles. At the start of the course, Dr. Hentschel will state his expectations and goals, the dates of major activities and assessments, the descriptions of major activities and assessments, and the grading policies (i.e., this document). The purpose of this extensive document is to ensure that students can plan ahead. Activities will start and end on time. Student performance on exams and other assessments of learning will be evaluated objectively and consistently. Dr. Hentschel will be available to Biol 515 students during a weekly office hour (Tuesdays 2-3:00pm) and at other times by e-mail appointment (hentsche@sunstroke.sdsu.edu).

Students’ questions will be answered respectfully and in a timely manner. Students’ feedback on the course is highly valued, and Dr. Hentschel encourages students to share their views so that he can make improvements or be sure to continue doing things that work well.
