All registered students and any crashers should BE PREPARED FOR THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS (Wed Aug 31 1:00-4:40pm in LS 343).

Students who are well prepared for the start of the semester ALWAYS do very well in Biol 515! In contrast, students who are unprepared often struggle with the advanced content. Dr. Hentschel strongly recommends that students prepare for the first day of class by doing all of the following:

1) Be sure you have fulfilled the prerequisite for Biol 515, Biol 201B (formerly numbered Biol 201, "Principles of Organismal Biology"). Also, make sure that you have completed the SDSU Writing Proficiency Assessment (WPA) Exam, which is a prerequisite for all upper-division Biology courses. Any registered student who does not meet the prerequisites will be dropped from Biol 515, in accord with SDSU policy. If you are uncertain about your prerequisites, check your SDSU transcript or the Biology Undergraduate Advising Office immediately.

2) Download, print, and read the "Class Schedule" PDF handout (link above). Bring this handout to class Aug 31.

3) Download, print, and look over the main "Course Description & Policies" PDF handout (link on the main Biol-515 Homepage). Bring this handout to class Aug 31.

4) Download, print, and look over the main "Term Paper" PDF handout (link on the main Biol-515 Homepage). Bring this handout to class Aug 31.

5) Download the 2005 Lab Manual for Biol 515 (link above). Print at least Lab #1 and bring it to class Aug 31. Dr. Hentschel distributes his lab manual for FREE at the Biol-515 website, rather than selling it at the bookstore!

6) Refresh your memory of basic invertebrate biology (i.e., Biol 201B) by reviewing the 2-3 chapters on invertebrate animals in your introductory biology textbook (e.g., Chapters 31-33 in Purves et al. 2001).

7) Buy the REQUIRED textbook (Pechenik 2005) and complete the assigned reading for Aug 31 BEFORE class (Chapters 1, 2, 5 and 23 -- all are short, overview chapters).

Biol 515 is fully enrolled. Dr. Hentschel estimates that Biol 515 might be able to accommodate a few "crashers" who were unable to formally register for the course. Students interested in "crashing" must attend the first class meeting (Wed Aug 31 13:00-16:40 in LS 343). If space becomes available, crashers will be admitted only after they have demonstrated adequate mastery of the prerequisite material (i.e., the invertebrate portions of Biol 201B). Furthermore, to be added to the roster, a crasher must participate in all class activities prior to the date when a seat became available.

The Fall 2005 Biol-515 website is now online!

It will be very helpful if students print the two main "syllabus" handouts and bring them to the first class Aug 31:

"Course Description & Policies" and the "Term Paper Handout"

In addition to the text links above, these two main handouts are available as PDF files on the main Biol 515 Homepage, right below the big SDSU freeway sign that got you to this announcements page. In that place on the homepage, you also will find several appendices to the two main "syllabus" handouts. It's not necessary that students print the appendices before Aug 31, but you might want to look at these appendix files after reading the two main handouts "Course Description & Policies" and the "Term Paper Handout".

Any student who is enrolled in Biol 515 but does not attend the first two class meetings (Aug 31 and Sep 7) will miss several graded assignments and will be dropped from the Biol 515 roster in accord with SDSU policy.

Any student who is enrolled in Biol 515 but has not fulfilled the course prerequisites (Biol 201B, formerly Biol 201 "Principles of Organismal Biology" and the SDSU Writing Proficiency Assessment, WPA) will be dropped from the Biol 515 roster in accord with SDSU policy.

The 2004 Biol-515 Blackboard site is now operational and can be accessed by students who are formally registered in Biol 515!

Please note: there is some redundancy between the information on this site and that available on the Blackboard site. This is because, while the whole world can access this web site, only students officially registered in Biol 515 can access the Blackboard site. Unenrolled "crashers" or students interested in taking Biol-515 next year, for example, cannot access the Blackboard site.

The Blackboard site has two features that are unique: the WEEKLY ONLINE QUIZ and the WEEKLY TIME REPORTS.

The major feature unique to this full-access web site is the 2005 LAB MANUAL for Biol 515.
