TEXT:
Rice, Medical Terminology with Human Anatomy, 5E. This is a required text, since
information within it is essential
to obtain in order to pass this course.
It is available at
Aztec Shops on campus.
COURSE OBJECTIVE: Medical
Terminology is a 2-unit lower division elective, and is open to
students
in all major fields. The class meets
for 50 minutes twice a week (11:00 - 11:50
MW). The course is designed to
guide you through an introductory level survey of medical terminology as a
preparation for future careers in the Allied Health Sciences (medicine,
dentisty, veterinary science, nursing, etc.).
It is also a helpful course for students planning to enter biomedical
research and teaching. The course
includes discussion of Latin and Greek word parts and how they are assembled to
form words, overviews of anatomy and physiology, and discussions of many types
of diseases and medical treatments.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS: There will
be four (4) exams and a final exam, each weighted equally at 100 points. The
final exam will be comprehensive. Your
course grade will be based on
your four (4) BEST exam scores. Thus, your lowest exam score will be dropped
from your course total average. If you are satisfied with your grade after
completion of the first four
exams, you may elect NOT to take the
final exam. School policy dictates that
you must still attend class.
Exams
may NOT be made up. If you miss one exam, it will become the exam you drop.
If you miss more than one exam you will receive a ZERO for each
additional exam
missed. The exam schedule is flexible and may be
changed at my discretion. Please note
that
it
is YOUR responsibility to find out
if and when exam dates have been changed from the schedule.
Class meetings will be designed on the
basis of a standard lecture format. You
will be expected to take complete
notes. Since exam questions will be
selected from emphasized topics in
the lecture, I urge you to attend all class meetings. For optimal learning, it is best if you read and review assigned readings from the text prior to
class meetings. As you do so, jot down any concepts you do not
understand; questions are welcome during lectures as long as time permits.
GRADING: Your final grade
will be based on the percentage of your four (4) highest exam scores, thus a total of 400 points are
possible. The final grade scale is as
follows:
100% - 90%
= A
89%
- 80% = B
79%
- 70% = C
69%
- 60% = D
59% and below is an F.
