Pre-& Post-Doctoral Research Positions Available in the Center for Behavioral Epidemiology and Community Health (CBEACH), Graduate School of Public Health, SDSU

CBEACH offers positions from entry level research assistants to advanced scholars. Applicants may apply at any time and will be considered based on competitive credentials and funding availability. Pre- and post-doctoral positions are available, contingent on qualified applicants. Minority applicants are encouraged to apply, because of the availability of specific funds to increase minority participation in science. Full or part-time positions are possible. Salary is dependent on experience and level of appointment. Post-baccalaureate positions start at $14,000; postdoctoral positions start at $30,000.

Duties to be performed are dependent on rank and experience. Pre-doctoral applicants will be expected to assist with behavioral interventions, measurement development, data collection and/or processing and analyses. Dependent on rank and experience, pre-doctoral candidates will be assigned writing responsibilities for grant proposals and scientific publications, and/or may serve in project coordinator roles. Post-doctoral candidates will be responsible for design and supervision of studies and will be asked to lead key features (e.g. behavioral interventions, statistical analyses, etc.) of on-going research, depending on specialty skills.

Outstanding students from a variety of professional backgrounds may qualify. Students from behavioral and social sciences, medicine, dentistry, and all allied health fields (nursing, nutrition, exercise science, etc) may qualify for employment. Students with training in behavioral analysis and behavior change techniques, in applied research methods, and students with Spanish language, and statistical software experience will be given priority.

Candidates interested in completing an MPH or PhD may apply concurrently to the degree programs in Health Promotion and/or Epidemiology for consideration. Concurrent degree training and research responsibilities are usually 50% time each. Faculty on sabbatical and/or interested in public health research as a new career are encouraged to apply. Positions awarded to post-doctoral candidates may include adjunct faculty status in the Graduate School of Public Health or other program in the University. Rank is determined by experience.

The Center is funded to conduct epidemiological and community trial research concerning a variety of public health concerns. Funding comes from numerous agencies, with most from NIH. Current studies include analyses concerning passive smoking exposure among children, exercise studies in children and adults, high risk sexual practice and drug use prevention among adolescents and divorced women, injury and aggression control, and adherence with medical regimens. Studies cover numerous diseases, including heart, cancer, diabetes, asthma, cystic fibrosis, osteoporosis, TB, AIDS, STDs, others. Study samples usually involve under-served, low-income high risk populations, including Latino, African American, children, adolescents, and women. All studies are multi-disciplinary combining basic, clinical and community sciences, with special emphasis on health-related behavior.

Interested professionals should send a statement of interest and background experience that makes clear research skills and career goals. Send a curriculum vitae and a summary of degrees completed and grade point averages for each, and certifications/licenses. Do not send letters of recommendation or transcripts as part of the initial application. Include a salary history and minimum salary requirements. Please include information regarding concurrent applications for degree programs.

Note that due to the high volume of mail we receive, we may not acknowledge receipt of your application. Applications will be held for 6 months and considered for positions during that time. Applicants are welcome to provide updated information after 6 months and will be considered for future positions accordingly.
