A one-year intervention involving patients, ages eight to eighteen years, with cystic fibrosis at Children's Hospital in Pittsburg, Philadelphia. The purpose of the trial is to improve the patients' VO2-max by using a behavior modification program to increase their aerobic activity level. The study employed a two group design. Those randomly assigned to the aerobic group were given a stair stepper and asked to do three sessions of exercise each week. A shaping process was used until the sessions reached twenty minutes in length. Those assigned to the control group were given weight training equipment and asked to do three sessions of upper body strengthening exercises. Our role at C-BEACH has been to organize, enter, and analyze the data, as well as to provide advice concerning the use of behavior modification techniques to those conducting the trial in Pittsburg.
