SUMMER FIELD ASSISTANT

STARR RANCH SANCTUARY

TRABUCO CANYON, CA

Audubon's Starr Ranch Sanctuary in southeast Orange County, CA solicits applicants for a position as summer field assistant.  Must be flexible and willing to work on other Ranch activities, such as maintenance and our summer children's education program.

The field assistant aspect of the position is with our invasive plant species control and grassland/coastal sage scrub restoration project. This research-based program aims to control the invasive grassland species, Cynara cardunculus (artichoke thistle) and other exotics, without chemicals and restore to rare native habitat.

Summer is our dry season and field work winds down but does continue at a slower pace.  Must be willing to do mechanical and physical removal of artichoke thistle and other invasive plant species. May collect, enter, and help summarize data from censuses and experiments on weed control and restoration techniques.

Must have willingness and enthusiasm to help with all aspects of weed control and restoration and other Ranch activities.  Maintenance work could include aspects of sanctuary upkeep such as mowing, vehicle and building maintenance.  Education responsibilities would involve not teaching but rather helping to ensure kids' safety for our Starr Ranch Junior Biologists, kids ages 8-13 who come to the Ranch to learn how biologists study wildlife.  Must have enthusiasm for working outdoors in warm, dry weather.

Opportunity to live on our 4000 acre Sanctuary. Position runs June through August, 2007.

SALARY: $300/week plus housing.

QUALIFICATIONS: College graduate with ecological, biological, or conservation background.  Willingness to be flexible and work hard.  Field experience desirable but not essential.
