George began working at SDSU in 1987 as a Masters student, and after finishing his thesis on nitrogen cycling and plant-nitrogen dynamics in 1990, he joined the Global Change Research Group's efforts in quantifying the net CO₂ flux of arctic ecosystems of the North Slope of Alaska. Since then, he has studied the effects of climate change on arctic and sub-arctic ecosystem carbon balance, and has been involved with similar efforts in semi-arid woodlands of Sourthern California. He is currently working toward the completion of his Ph.D. which involves the use of eddy covariance techniques in determing the landscape-level net CO₂, H₂O vapor, and energy fluxes of arctic ecosystems.
