Birthdate: 4 May 1941
Birthplace: Chicago, Illinois, USA

B.S. 1972. San Diego State University. San Diego, California. USA (Biology)
M.S. 1974. San Diego State University. San Diego, California. USA (Biology, Ecology)
Ph.D. 1978. Duke University. Durham, North Carolina. USA (Physiological Plant Ecology, Micro-Meteorology)

Steve received his Ph.D. training under Boyd Strain and Ken Knoerr at Duke University. Since completing his degree he has been involved in field research in diverse biomes including Alaskan tundra, southeastern US deciduous forest, California chaparral, Chilean matorral, Iceland, and Costa Rican moist tropics. His research interests have centered around photosynthetic and water relations adaptations of plants to environment, and in the instrumentation required to study these areas. More recently he has become involved in research on effects of elevated CO2 being conducted at the San Diego State University Global Change Research Group, where he has focussed on features of photosynthetic adaptation of chaparral plants under elevated CO2 conditions. Currently he is working on hardware and software systems for application in free-air CO2 enrichment (“FACE”) studies, with a view toward developing low-cost high performance systems.
