Ines Ibanez became interested in environmental sciences after earning her Bachelor's degree in Biology. During the next year, she spent three months at the University of Wales Bangor and four months at Helsinki University She took ecology courses and worked on lichen taxonomy finishing her "Licenciatura de Grado". In 1994 she was awarded the Fulbright scholarship to pursue a Masters in natural resources in the U.S.A. During her masters work in Range Science, at Utah State University, her research focused on Plant Population Ecology working with Dr. E.W. Schupp. Ines' interest in mediterranean vegetation's response to fire and to a changing climate lead her to Dr. Oechel and the GCRG.
Education:
Ph. D. Candidate, SDSU-UC Davis Joint Program in Ecology
M.S. Range Science (Plant Ecology), USU, 1998.
B.S. Biology (Botany), Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain, 1993.
Research interests:
Ines' primary field of interest is natural vegetation responses to a global climate change after disturbances such as fire. Her doctoral research focuses on the response and competitiveness of coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia) to environmental factors (drought, herbivory, and interspecies competition) under several CO2 levels; and the successional trends of chaparral vegetation after fire at different CO2 concentrations.
Her ultimate objective is a research career (academic or in a research center) related to rehabilitation of degraded areas and the conservation of nature in the form of a sustainable approach under the perspective of a changing environment.
Awards:
Erasmus fellowship 1993, University of Wales Bangor, UK.
Helsinki University exchange scholarship 1994, Helsinki University, Finland.
Fulbright grant 1995-1997, Utah State University, Logan, Utah, U.S.A.
