Mathematics 534A, Summer Semester, 1998

Lecture: Monday through Friday (excluding July 3) in BA 257 from 8 to 9:30 in the morning.
Office Hours: After each lecture in BA 228 from 11 to 12 in the morning. Also by appointment. Appointments may be scheduled in person or via e-mail.
Text: "Advanced Calculus" by Fitzpatrick (required) and "Principles of Mathematical Analysis" by Rudin (optional).
Contents: The first 6 chapters and the first two sections of Chapter 7 of the textbook, i.e., preliminaries on sets and functions, the real numbers, sequences of real numbers, continuous functions and limits, differentiation, the elementary functions, integration, and the fundamental theorems of calculus.
Homework Assignments: There will be five weekly homework assignments. They are available in class on the following Mondays: June 22, 29, July 6, 12, 19. Usually, assignments may be downloaded from my web page already on the weekend (including Friday afternoon) before. Assignments will be collected the following Monday, graded, and returned to the students. No late assignments will be accepted. This is intended to be an individual effort and copying is not permitted. The pages of the solutions must be stapled together.
Quizzes: Each week (except the first one) will start with a short quiz (at most 20 minutes; the remainder of the Monday sessions will will be devoted to the discussion of the homework assignments). The emphasis of these quizzes is on the theoretical material presented during the previous week. The quizzes are closed book and calculators are not allowed.
Final Exam: The final exam is comprehensive and will be on Friday, July 31, in BA 257 from 8 to 9:30 in the morning. The exam is open book and calculators may be used.
Grading Policy: Each of the five homework assignments is worth 10 points, each of the five quizzes 5 points, and the final exam 25 points. Hence the emphasis on the final amount of points is weighted as follows:
