In fall 1990, about 5,000 juvenile red sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus franciscanus) were released at each of four offshore sites: two in northern and two in southern California. The study sites were Noyo Entrance and Van Damme State Park near Fort Bragg (Mendocino County) in northern California and La Jolla and Point Loma ( San Diego County) in southern California.

The juvenile sea urchins were purchased from Ocean Farms of Hawaii where they were cultured from brood stock collected near the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Los Angeles County, CA. Prior to outplanting, the juvenile sea urchins were incubated in a calcein solution for 24 hours to tag growing skeletal elements. Calcein tags can be detected by fluorescence under ultraviolet light. Following release, the sea urchins were checked once within the first week and then left undisturbed for one year (Table 1).

(9) and (10) were measured optically in the usual way with 'esophageal' growth measured on the flat jaw and 'labial' measured on the upright jaw.
(11) is (8) - (9+10); this is the way jawt is estimated for tetracycline tagged animals
(12) size of the fluorescent jaw inside to extant jaw; the jaw was set on edge, just like measuring the labial size, and optical projection was measured from the labial tip to the esophageal end of the glowing image. The point of these measurements was to compare caliper and ocular micrometer measurements. Jaws are not perfect triangles and are curved in all three dimensions. Calipers span curves and force a structure to be represented by dimensions that are parallel with the caliper jaws. On the other hand, optical measurements always are projections of curves or three dimensional structures onto a two dimensional micrometer.
