Red sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus franciscanus, at San Nicolas Island, CA (Ebert and Russell 1993).

Data are based on animals tagged with tetracycline in 1990 and collected one year later. Study sites were large concrete blocks along a subtidal fuel line. Animals on one concrete block were tagged on 10 February 1990 and collected 10 February 1991. On a second block, animals were tagged on 25 March 1990 and collected 20 March 1991. In the following data set, diameter and height of the test ("shell") was measured after animals were cleaned in 5.25% sodium hypochlorite bleach. Tests of some animals fell apart and could not be measured and so diameter and height measurements appear as blanks in the data set. Jaws (demi-pyramids) of Aristotle's lantern were used to measure growth increments and two measurements were made. The growth increments closest to the mouth opening is called labial (L) and the increment farthest from the opening is called esophagael (E). The sum of these two measurements is the total growth increment and so jaw size at the time of tagging,Jt, is jaw size at collection in 1991, Jt+1, minus (E+L):

Jt = Jt+1 - (E+L)

and

ÆJ = E+L.

Jt and Jt+1 and the data used for estimation of growth using the Richards or Tanaka functions and Jt and ÆJ are used with Francis' model on pages 194-196.
There are 6 data values for each record and all measurements are in centimeters. Blanks for diameter and height mean that the animal disarticulated during cleaning. Blanks for growth increments mean that no tetracycline tag was detected. Measurements in a record are separated by commas and blanks are recorded as periods "." so ,., or ,.¶ is a blank.

Block #2. Animals were tagged on 25 March 1990 and collected 20 March 1991. There is an error in how the data were analyzed by Ebert and Russell (1993) as well as in the presentation in the text. Figure 11.13 in the text shows N=99 for the March sample whereas actually N=103. Animal #'s 153, 191, 237, and 246 were excluded from the original analysis because labial growth was entered as a blank rather than 0. Consequently when a growth analysis was done, these animals were excluded. I have left the data file as originally used but you may wish to make these corrections for your own purposes. Formatting is the same as for Block #1.
