According to the Family Educational Rights
and Privacy Act of 1974, students (persons admitted and enrolled
in the program)
have the right to inspect letters of recommendation written in
support of an application for admission and financial assistance.
In addition, the law permits students to expressly waive the
right to inspect letters submitted in their behalf, although
such a waiver must be voluntary and cannot be a condition of
admission, award, or employment. Recommendation forms contain
areas wherein applicants may waive access if they so choose.
The SDSU/UCSD Joint Ph.D. in Mathematics and
Science Education is a full-time program. Admitted students work
as research or teaching assistants to earn their stipends and register
for a full graduate load each term. Students may not hold other
positions or forms of employment while enrolled in the joint
doctoral program.
