ABSTRACT
The present study examined predictions from several theories
of depression in judgment of the positive and negative
emotionality of words by dysphoric and nondysphoric
individuals. One hundred forty-two dysphoric and 767
nondysphoric students rated the positivity and negative
emotionality of 42 words. More dysphoric individuals
generally rated words as more negative than other individuals.
Results were interpretted to support Ingram’s (1984) theory of
depression and Schwartz and Garamoni’s (1989) States of
Mind model.
