Threshold noise serves two purposes in the network. It allows for
variability to occur in the time at when ``No'' responses are made.
Because of this property, it can allow for the generation of false
alarms. Were the temporal threshold to be a constant, greater than the
time taken for nearly all words to be recognized, very few false
alarms would be created. Because the threshold for ``No'' responses is
allowed to vary into the range at which words are detected, sometimes
false alarms can occur in the network.
